After the Battle of Sakarya was won, Commander-in-Chief Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was awarded the title of field marshal and veteran by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on September 19, 1921, with Law No. 153.
There cannot be a concept as beautiful as being a martyr and a veteran defending the homeland for us. The great importance of martyrdom and veteran status in the eyes of the state and the nation finds meaning in the following statements of the Great Leader Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk: “The Heroic Turkish Army; this title and rank, which signifies the presence of the great victory won with your heroism by the nation, I will only attribute to you and I will carry it as the greatest pride of my entire military life. It is our national duty to glorify the memories of our veterans and martyrs who shed their blood on every inch of our homeland to preserve our national independence and the indivisible integrity of the homeland with its nation, who wrote golden pages in Turkish history, and to express our feelings of gratitude to them. It is an expression of our nation’s commitment to its history and past to protect and respect these valuable people who fought the enemy relentlessly in the liberation of our homeland and struggled for their lives as disabled or veterans.” These words of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk are the highest pride and pledge of our martyrs and veterans. We bow with respect before the spiritual presence of all our martyrs and veterans who have passed into eternity, especially Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his brothers-in-arms and we express our love and gratitude to our heroic veterans.
